The 2022 AG formats: Networking sessions, satellite meetings, GA sessions, etc.

    GYA General Assembly Sessions
These are the core of any GYA Annual General Meeting, of course, and provide ample opportunity to discuss core GYA issues, and for members to vote on them. This year, among other items, we will discuss the proposed Code of Professional Behaviour and Conduct, and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on young academy membership duration.

GYA Activities groups on the Agora
All groups, as well as GYA Committees and the EC, will have a space on...

Do check whether you have the latest update installed, and whether you have your login credentials at the ready.

Heading into the third year of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was simply not possible to allow for a full in-person conference and AGM this year. Rest assured, facing this reality happened with a heavy heart. We all want to meet again, and it requires quite large amounts of strength to continue...

  • Data costs coverage

    Data costs coverage

Since meetings went online the last two years, we became more acutely aware as a global organization that the cost of downloading and uploading data – and thus the cost of participating in online meetings – can vary greatly in different regions and countries. (See this overview of varying mobile data costs around the world)
The GYA therefore offers to members and new members from low and middle-income countries the option to request “data co-funding” for the purpose of participating in...

"Japan through the eyes of a foreigner" by Abel Polese

The ubiquity of Japanese informal practices and the Okinawan moai

I was lucky enough to be awarded a JSPS invitational fellowship and even luckier to be allowed into Japan in spite of COVID. The usually crowded Kyoto, possibly the most popular tourist destination in Japan, was half empty. Inasmuch as it was hard to build a social life, I could gain an unexpected view on so many things. Temples and Shrines usually packed with tourists offered themselves to me completely empty. It was...
