Online Meeting Fatigue - Taking the problem by its virtual horns

  • Online Meeting Fatigue - Taking the problem by its virtual horns

aka Can we just say it? We’re all tired of Online Meetings

No two ways about it - we’ve all been in waaaaaaay too many online meetings since the last eAGM in 2020. While it was new and exciting a year ago (despite the strange and new and often scary situation of a worldwide pandemic) and we were all so relieved to be able to see one another for the AGM last year, this year feels... different.

So let’s just give it a name: it’s the “Online-Meeting fatigue spectrum”. And we refer to it as a spectrum because it exists in many forms and variations, and some of us suffer from it more than others.

Which is why we are not looking at 6 weeks of GYA AGM and Conference related events this year; we’ve condensed it down. Into one week, of four (very long) days. (and some WG meetings before and after ????)

To ease the strain on those of us on Online-Meeting fatigue spectrum, we are planning a programme with numerous breaks. It’s intense and it doesn’t fit perfectly with everyone’s time zones. But travel and jet lag are missing from the equation, so consider this an imperfect replacement and consider trying a late-night tea conversation with someone else in another part of the world at his/her breakfast table.

We’re using a much more structured approach with a new platform that will open even sooner than we did last year so that you have plenty of time not just to read up on information (such as reports, etc.) but also get used to the platform, and already begin exchanging ideas.

We’re all in the same boat; we’re equally tired of yet more online meetings. And yet, we need to hang in there! The GYA thrives off of its connections between members and alumni. We need to continue like this, need to integrate our 31 incoming members much like we’ve done in the past to ensure that the GYA moves forward even in these times. Remember your first AGM? That first time you met your fellow members and alumni? When you were inaugurated and stood in front of the General Assembly to accept your certificate? Remember those nights spent sitting around a table somewhere, developing ideas for the next day, the next publication or the next working group? Remember laughing, exchanging incredible ideas and finding others that were like-minded or had eye-opening different perspectives? This is what we all need to keep alive, and need to offer the cohorts that will follow.

So it’s four days in June. Four days that might be tough but, as always they’ll pay off – because you’ll push your ideas forward, pave the way for young scientists after you, and meet friends while you’re at it. We cannot do it without you.

    GYA is you.

    You are the GYA.

Be on board for the 2021 eAGM. Join the Agora today.

And while you wait for your account to be verified, how about helping us (your fellow members , alumni and the Office) with tips and idea about how to battle online-meeting fatigue? What do you do to motive yourself during these times? How do you find new, positive energy? What could others try who are currently no so successful in this regard?

Share your thoughts with us now.

Heading into the third year of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was simply not possible to allow for a full in-person conference and AGM this year. Rest assured, facing this reality happened with a heavy heart. We all want to meet again, and it requires quite large amounts of strength to continue...
