Yoko Shimpuku has been a member of the Global Young Academy since 2018. She is a professor in Global Health Nursing at the Hiroshima University in Japan. She has served as a member of the Executive Committee between 2018 and 2021, three years in a row.
This year’s conference theme is “Harmonising reason with sensibility: Regenerating science for an inclusive and sustainable future”.

It is also important to go beyond a facile opposition between tradition and science. Taking human intuition, technical skills, neglected disciplines and indigenous knowledge into account will enrich science and broaden society’s knowledge base.
During this conference, we would like to discuss ways to harmonise reason with sensibility so that we can move toward an inclusive and sustainable future.
The conference logo illustrates a hydrangea and a geometric pattern. As the conference will be held in June when the hydrangea are blooming in Japan, we chose a hydrangea to represent art. A geometric pattern represents reason. These elements are used to illustrate the beauty of using both reason and sensibility together.

GYA General Assembly Sessions
These are the core of any GYA Annual General Meeting, of course, and provide ample opportunity to discuss core GYA issues, and for members to vote on them. This year, among other items, we will discuss the proposed Code of Professional Behaviour and Conduct, and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on young academy membership duration.

Zoom – We will once again be using Zoom for all the video conferencing sessions of the AGM (and conference). You can use Zoom without a local install – but might, after the past two years spent in pandemic times, have a local client installed already. Do check whether you have the latest update installed, and whether you have your login credentials at the ready.

Heading into the third year of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was simply not possible to allow for a full in-person conference and AGM this year.
