  • "Japan through the eyes of a foreigner" by Abel Polese

"Japan through the eyes of a foreigner" by Abel Polese

The ubiquity of Japanese informal practices and the Okinawan moai

I was lucky enough to be awarded a JSPS invitational fellowship and even luckier to be allowed into Japan in spite of COVID. The usually crowded Kyoto, possibly the most popular tourist destination in Japan, was half empty. Inasmuch as it was hard to build a social life, I could gain an unexpected view on so many things. Temples and Shrines usually packed with tourists offered themselves to me completely empty. It was...

    What does the GYA do?

The vision of the Global Young Academy (GYA) is science for all; science for the future, and its mission is to give a voice to young scientists. In its ten years, the GYA has accomplished much through the activity of its members and the strength of its network. The GYA develops, connects and mobilizes young talents from over 83 countries and across disciplines. Moreover, we empower young researchers and scientists to lead international, interdisciplinary, and inter-generational dialogue with the...

  • What happens at an AGM and Conference?

What happens at an AGM and Conference?

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) – is the main annual event of the GYA. It is a large working meeting: members gather once a year in order to engage in capacity building, networking and collaboration in existing working groups, as well as to forge new activities, discuss the future of the GYA and elect the GYA’s executive committee. AGMs are paired with an International Conference of Young Scientists, where members discuss a theme of global relevance from all disciplinary perspectives and interact...

GYA's Pillars: Introducing the Working Groups, Committees and the EC in particular

You are the GYA, the GYA is you! This becomes apparent in so many ways. In this article we want to look at three ways you can get engaged in particular: the GYA Activities Groups, the Committees, and the Executive Committee in particular.

The Activities Groups are activities proposed by GYA members. GYA activities can take various forms:...

  • GYA Committees at the AGM

    GYA Committees at the AGM

Similarly to the GYA activities groups (see above), the GYA Committees can also make use of virtual collaboration space on the AGM platform. Committee co-leads are asked to provide their brief reports (and optional brief welcome videos) to Anna-Maria by 30 April 2022.

A live Committee session will be scheduled for July, with details to follow soon.
A few weeks after the e-AGM main week, once new members will have joined the committees, and once new co-leads will be in place (where...

GYA Activities groups at the e-AGM

Similar to last year, all GYA Activities Groups (working groups, incubators, strategic projects, 2020/22 focus areas, partner projects and Sasha-Kagansky Interdisciplinary Grant groups) can make use of the virtual collaboration space on the GYA Agora (see here for information how to access this year’s AGM platform).

All activities-related information and documents for the e-AGM will be online from early May, so that groups can then start collaborating electronically (e.g. jointly...

What to expect at the 2022 AGM and Conference

The AGM, as most of you know, is usually an extremely busy week during which so much happens and little sleep is had. This year's online AGM is designed to include the core aspects of this intense one-week-event.

Main elements of an AGM are:
    • Elections
    • New Member Induction
    • Internal Reports and General Assembly meetings
    • Member interaction
    • Working Group presentations, communication and meeting opportunities
    • Goodbye to outgoing members
    • New Member science leadership workshop
    ...

  • Online Meeting Fatigue - Taking the problem by its virtual horns

Online Meeting Fatigue - Taking the problem by its virtual horns

aka Can we just say it? We’re all tired of Online Meetings

No two ways about it - we’ve all been in waaaaaaay too many online meetings since the last eAGM in 2020. While it was new and exciting a year ago (despite the strange and new and often scary situation of a worldwide pandemic) and we were all so relieved to be able to see one another for the AGM last year, this year feels... different.

So let’s just give it a name: it’s the “Online-Meeting fatigue spectrum”....

  • Seasonal Flowering Clock
    by GYA AGM Organisation
Brought to you by Nina Yasuda

The eternal cycles of nature, while changing, never lose their creativity.

Art is one way to harmonize and visualize the "sensibility to feel beauty" and "science reveals its truth.”
The plants of this art garden are designed to bloom in sequence over the course of a year.
They are intended to evoke our imagination about the cycles of nature and time, and to pass on the vegetation of the present to future generations....

    GYA General Assembly Sessions
These are the core of any GYA Annual General Meeting, of course, and provide ample opportunity to discuss core GYA issues, and for members to vote on them. This year, among other items, we will discuss the proposed Code of Professional Behaviour and Conduct, and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on young academy membership duration.

Heading into the third year of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was simply not possible to allow for a full in-person conference and AGM this year. Rest assured, facing this reality happened with a heavy heart. We all want to meet again, and it requires quite large amounts of strength to continue...
